The perils of face blindness (Prosopagnosia or facial agnosia)
Here is a website that tells about a little known social learning disability that can make life a living Hell for those who have it. We who are afflicted with this problem (yes, I have it), cannot tell people apart by their faces. There is a part of the brain called the fuisiform face area that is EXTREMELY good at helping its owners tell folks apart by their faces. But in us, it doesn't work right or at all. We have to tell people apart in other ways, clothing, hair, body type, etc. And it isn't easy! I was very shy as a kid and would get in trouble for "snubbing" folks because I would walk or ride right by them and not give them a friendly smile. People will come up to me and expect me to know them, but instead of giving them a warm smile of recognition I am standing their way a frown on my face, trying to figure out who they are. By the time I do, IF I do, the moment for a warm human connection has passed, never to return. It can be lonely.
I once was bullied by another kid and when I tried to tell the teacher who did it, I accidentally accused the wrong child!
They have recently discovered this problem is more common than was once thought.
